What is the name of this mountain over there?

Use your mobile phone to find out!

SwissPeaks and WorldPeaks are two augmented reality applications for the Apple iPhone 3GS. Both provide you with information about mountains in sight. Simply identify mountains outdoors with your iPhone when hiking, biking, climbing or skiing, or whenever mountains are visible.

Mountains you can see through the phone camera are automatically labeled with their name, height and the distance from your location. You can get even more information for specific mountains with one click from wikipedia or special mountaineer websites.

SwissPeaksSwissPeaks works only in Switzerland, where a unique visibility service provided by Ernst Basler + Partner shows you only mountains which are actually visible from your current viewpoint.

WorldPeaksWorldPeaks is the version which works worldwide and also offline as soon as the peaks database for the country has been downloaded.

Both applications are available on the iTunes App Store. Please install SwissPeaks for use in Switzerland and WorldPeaks for the rest of the world.

SwissPeaks and WorldPeaks use location, digital compass and accelerometer data of the iPhone 3GS. Both allow for easy manual correction of the horizontal and vertical error coming from the sensors. SwissPeaks and WorldPeaks work only on the iPhone 3GS. Older iPhone models are not supported.

We have also developed layers with the same information for the Layar Reality Browser, an augmented reality framework for Android devices. If you have an Android device, please install Layar and add the layer called "SwissPeaks" or "WorldPeaks".

SwissPeaks and WorldPeaks have been developed in Switzerland (there are a lot of mountains to identify here!) at the chair of Information Management, ETH Zurich, headed by Prof. Elgar Fleisch, in cooperation with Ernst Basler + Partner.
